did the Romans build more than 1 bridge across the Thames? London Bridge connects 2 Roman roads, the A3 to the sth coast and A10 to herts and to the north. However did they build a bridge at vauxhall? The present bridge connects 2 Roman roads, the A202 which joins the Old Kent Rd to Kent and goes north to the A5 to the M1.m
Hi Elkstone
I seem to remember that there has always been a movement that beleive that there was a Roman crossing at Lambeth / Horseferry but as far as I know it wasn't proved - but others may know more.
I think Time Team were involved in looking for a Roman Road at Lambeth Palace - if that's any help.
Kind regards - TA

The confluence of the Effra and Merflete with the Thames at Vauxhall supports the idea that a Roman bridge (and possibly an earlier one) existed there. In its shallower, wider form this would have led to shingle and sandbank "islands" which would have greatly facilitated spanning the intervening stretches.
Time Team in Series 9 investigated wooden posts found nearby dating back to pre-Roman times. The conclusions drawn were conjectural. They could have been a bridge, a wharf, or even a 3,000 year old ceremonial platform. As yet, apart from the fact that Roman roads exist on both sides, there has not been found any other supportive data favouring the bridge theory (the river was also probably easily fordable at that point which can be enough to account for the roads).
