C14 dates for food residue on potshards in northern Europe are often older than had been anticipated.Along the Baltic seaboard this can be explained by the marine reservoir effect. Mesolithic fresh water fish bones from Amose bog in Denmark have C14 ages 100-500 years older than their archaeological context.Residues from freshwater fish residues on pottery exhibited C14 age excesses up to 300 years. The moraine hills bordering the Amose Valley are rich in fossil carbonates, which gradually dissolve into the ground water. It is eventually transported to the lakes. Some locales have significantly greater groundwater influxes than others.Comparisons indicate that food residue from the outside of ceramic fragments provides a more accurate age than than samples extracted from the insides of vessels.Since a variety of foods adhere to pots, dates can vary between samples from the same cultural horizon.
No corrections have been formulated to correct for the above effects.Age determinations from ceramic shards can be equivocal,[A Fischer,2003].
