Alice Robert's enthusiasm, professionalism, intelligence and on screen manner provides such a welcome change to the usual type of young women presented to us by the senior management of the TV networks

She is proof that good looks and real intelligence can go together. Girls and young women need role models who have not achieved their fame by taking their clothes off and dating footballers

Perhaps you could find some more clever engaging young women to grace our screens

The thing is there does appear to still be a very dismissive attitude to female acedemics in the popular media. For all the qualifications that the likes of Alice Roberts, Bettany Hughes and Carenza Lewis have studied for, it does appear that the majority of commentators still cocentrate on their looks. One would be hard pressed to find a prominent female television historian who was rather plain or had reached middle age.

    Hi lolbeeble,

I think that is something of an exaggeration. My memory is that looks of the the male historian Michael Wood were often commented on as he strode round Hisarlik in his blue jeans. Possibly the TV historians you mention are cynosures of female beauty but surely art historian Sister Wendy became famous for her knowledge and infectious enthusiasm?

    Best wishes,

    TP

Dunno, call me a cynic but I think it was as much the novelty factor of a nun discussing all those sensual and fleshy nudes.

The novelty factor will always be there, but I hope that Alice Roberts might inspire young women to do more with their lives than become glamour models or WAGS

There are lots of new faces appearing in serious programmes which is wonderful, but most of them are young men, admittedly very attractive ones in most cases.

It would be excellent to see some older women in these roles. There doesn't seem to be a problem with older male historians. Many of us female baby boomers still have a lot to offer. Those of us who fought very hard for the opportunities younger women are enjoying are not without talent

What exactly IS Dr Alice a doctor of? She's been an Archaeologist on Time Team, a Marine Biologist on Coast, a Medic one one of the numerous diet programmes, and has now morphed into an Anthropologist??????

"...What exactly IS Dr Alice a doctor of?..."

    A Medical doctor, astonishingly enough.

It seems that she is really a jobbing presenter. Actually, I don't quite mean that. She seems better informed on whatever subject she presents on.

I think people are being a tad naive if they think looks are un-important for TV jobs. There are not THAT many ugly presenters, on either side of the great sex war.

    A quick biog....

I see that she is not only a qualified medical doctor, but also has a PhD in palaeopathology (the study of disease in ancient skeletons) - so that explains the Time Team link.

I saw a bit of an old Time Team at the weekend and she was on it. Not sure how long ago it was on, but she was sporting rather fetching dyed red hair!

And it's good to note that the hint of a west country accent hasn't been a barrier to her being on television and being taken seriously.

If I had to nominate a female role model I would nominate Dr Alixe Bovey, who presented the delightful Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 4 series In Search of Medieval Britain. She did it with charm and good humour and with a total lack of concern for her looks or intelligence, which is what the other presenters ought to aspire to.

Many of the women on Time Team, or zoologist Miranda Krestovnikoff (Coast)?

I agree with Bethany Hughes and Alice Roberts, instead of the trash, dumb slappers on reality TV or whom teenage girls think are so great in chavvy mags?

I dont think looks are important really where archaeology progs are concerned and they shouldnt be, sure Alice is easy on the eye, but i love to watch her because of her enthusiasm in everything she does, lets face it, Tony Robinson or Phil Harper dont exactly sell Time Team for the looks.....or do they?
