I heard that some conspiracy theorists and doom mongers claim the world will end in 2012. Maybe because the olympics bid willb bankrupt the planet lol! They claim it is because the Aztec calendar only went to 2012.

From what I know of the Aztecs their decendants still live in Mexico, but Im not sure if they still follow the ancient religion and culture.

Does it make any difference? Im sure their enemies or none believers did not follow the same calender or would be bothered?

Didnt other ancient cultures Egyptians, Chinese, etc have their own calendars, Im sure they did not predict when the earth will end by a date?

Yawn, I heard all this before following the millenium and millenium bug, the eclipse in 1999 etc all supposedly predicted by Nostradamus and of course nothing happened.

Yes I think it was the Mayan calendar. Aztecs themselves were conquerors of the Toltecs I think who lived in the huge city of what became today Mexico city - back then one of the largest cities in the world. Aztecs had come from the north, somewhere in modern Texas, thus they were a nomad tribe that after conquest installed themselves as leaders and merely took up the customs, habits and knowledge of the locals - Toltecs and other Mexicans but not Mayas who had been already in decay for some centuries then.

I do not remember if Toltecs had the same calendar as the Mayas, maybe yes, afterall while they were not exactly neighbours (Yucatan where the Mayas were is a considerable distance from Mexico city), there was considerable communication.

I have heard about the Maya calendar. I think the calendar does not end in 2012. It is only the end of a cycle (1 cycle = around 18,500 years), usually followed by catastrophes and end of civilisation as we know it and such (something similar to the story of Atlantis). True? Well it seems that most people who believe it are those who write those stupid books "Maya Prophecies", "Nostradamus prophecies", "Pyramids built by UFOs" and such.

Well, the solution is quite easy. You only need a bit of patience, its only 2,5 years away. If true then you can do nothing about it anyway, as we will be all dead (apart the 0,01% of the population - actually the unlucky ones taking for granted the barbaric state that will prevail after...). The only thing you can do is to live your life to the fullest, but then you shouldn't be needing a doom's day to do so.

Yes, the "world ends in 2012" theory is claimed to be shown by the Mayan calander. In reality, all meso-american calanders derive from the same source and have give similar predictions for the future. So Aztec calanders and Toltec calanders do the same as the Mayan ones.

Tha Aztec's own myths have them travelling form the far north, though there is some dispute whether this was an entire "people" or just a cultural elite which absorbed more local peasants. There is also doubt about how far the Aztecs travelled.

With your cities, are you confusing Tenochtitlan with Teotihuacan?

As far as I remember Mexico City (Tenochtitlan) was uninhabited countrtyside until the Aztecs built their city. Teotihuacan was considered to have been built and occupied by the Toltecs until the Aztecs conquored it, but as archeologists dig more up it looks to have been a pre-Toltec culture who simply abandoned the city, possibly due to toltec attacks. What now looks likely (from the fact that only high status buildings were destroyed in the C8th) is that Teotihuacan collapsed from internal disorder. The Toltecs minimally using it and was largely deserted when the Aztecs took control of the area.

394 years - you're confusing your conspiracy theories: 18,500 is the precession fo the earth claimed to prove ancient Egypt is even more ancient. smiley - winkeye

Depends what you mean by catastrophe. The ancient Maya probably never considered it to be automatically the end of history (they'd lived through such times before) but there was a periodic decline in their cities such as Chichen Itza co-inciding with the end of the long count. Possibly due to the Maya fearing the worst.
