Just a note for those who may not know it but the biennial general meeting of the Council for Independent Archaeology takes place next weekend, this time at Monmouth.
It costs Β£15 to attend, is open mainly to independent archaeologists but also those with a keen interest in the concept, and this year goes under the alternative title "The Southern Marches Archaeological Festival". The day includes talks on the Forest of Dean, Roman clay altars, excavations in Monmouth's Main Street, the barrows of Hergest Ridge, Roman fort excavation, aerial photography, and a visit to the Lost City of Trellech, once Wales' largest settlement and the centrepiece of the day out.
There will also be a chance to see and evaluate the latest in resistivity meters available at affordable prices to amateur archaeologists - the famous "twin probes" in other words.
Details can be found here
but time is short if anyone is interested so I'd recommend you contact the organisers on the number provided as payment on the booking form is by cheque and you know what the post is like these days ...
