When did rabbits first appear in the British Isles? I read a comment from Bernard Cornwell saying that when he was writing his Arthurian novels he knew he could not mention rabbits because there were none in Britain at the time. I thought they had been introduced by the Romans.
Officially during the Norman conquest but there is evidence of prior warrens existing
An archaeozoologist told me that she thought that they had probably been introduced twice, by the Romans and Normans. I believe there is a rabbit skeleton beneath a Roman stone somewhere, but whether I can find you chapter and verse somewhere I'm not sure. I'll try.
