    Fortaleza Arqueológica de Manco Pata

Exciting news has emerged from the rugged Andes near Cuzco, from west of Machu Picchu. Uncovered from under wild tropical vegetation, finely-crafted megalithic walls evidence that just-discovered "Manco Pata" is a significant lost ancient settlement.

This news has gotten off to a strange start by referencing another mythical "lost city" when Manco Pata is actually in the wrong direction. The Legend of Paititi is not related, except that now it oddly spins Manco Pata's discovery story. Has the tourist hype already started?

My first suspicion is that Manco Pata is a Royal Incan tambo on a route from one valley to another, that is IF the report of the fine quality of the masonry holds true. Perhaps more news soon, since this is still a breaking event, with archaeologists being dispatched to the rugged, remote scene of the ruins.

Ancient "Lost City" Discovered in Peru, Official Claims
Kelly Hearn for National Geographic News - Jan 16, 2008 -

Ruins recently discovered in southern Peru ....

Officials from the Peruvian government's Cusco-based National Institute of Culture (INC) met with Torres on Tuesday, according to Francisco Solís, an INC official.

"It is far too early to make any definitive judgments," Solís told National Geographic News. "We are going to dispatch a team to investigate."

Officials expect more details to emerge in the coming days, he said.

I'm trying to pinpoint Manco Pata's location. There is new Google Earth imagery in that area, albeit only in some locations, like around Cuzco. Manco Pata is west of Quillabamba (-12.88, -72.7), near 'Union Vista Alegre' - Lat-Long: -13.04, -73.25. This is the Machu Picchu latitude (-13.164, -72.546), some ruins placemarks here: Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail, and the Valley of the Incas
