Does anybody have any ideas who this might be? The usual candidate of Rammeses II must be eliminated if only because during a long and well documented reign there is no mention of plagues etc.

plus the fact that we have his body and therefore didn't die in the Red Sea

You're not going to get much in the way of answers because there is no way of knowing.

We have no evidence of the Israelites even being in Egypt in those numbers for that period of time.

It has even been suggested that the entire Exodus story was created in the post Babylonian exile to help the Israelites cope, "see we've been through this before" sort of exercise.

There are no records that I've ever heard of that even come close to showing either Israelite existence in Egypt or a Pharoh who suffered the death and destruction visited on Egypt based on the 10 plagues

I did see a thought-provoking documentary on anomalies in ancient time lines. Obviously as a TV programme it did not go into nearly enough depth as, for example, the excellent book "Centuries of Darkness" but it had a similar theme.

One of the striking things I recall was a discussion with some German archaeologists who had found the remains of a town near the Nile delta which they had classified as non-Egyptian but could not identify. The upshot of it all was that here was a "foreign" race living in Egypt in the Jews were supposed to have been but the remains were form a completely different time so the archaeologists were adamant they had found remains of some previously unknown people because the archaeological evidence did not tally with the documentary evidence..

Their argument was painted as rather ludicrous because it was essentially. "We can find no trace of the Jews at all, but they should be right here. Instead we have found this completely unknown race of people where the Jews should be but they can’t be the Jews because the time frame is wrong."

Unfortunately, while this was quite amusing in showing how dogmatic people can be, I don’t recall it mentioning which Pharaoh would have been around at the time that coincided with the remains they had found, nor what documentary evidence they were going by except the Bible. It's not an area I have studied in any detail, so I'm afraid I can’t give any sources for checking any of the details.

The only exodus of people from the Nile Delta to the Near East occurred shortly after the Hyksos were defeated,[Brested,1901].Whether this has any relationship to the Jewish exodus,is highly conjectural.

I wouldnt be so sure given that your quoted source is dated 1901. More recent writing might suggest otherwise.

years earlier I thought that they Hyksos might had something to do with these story in the bible - though few people would think of it, hence I did not insist much on it. Hyksos remain though quite a mystery.
