I am currently reading AD500, a histo-fiction (my invented term) book about a fictional journey to the British Isles by a Byzantine embasy in AD500.
The book describes an Irish custum whereby men would suck the nipples of Irish chief as a way of obtaining the protection of that chief. The book recommeds that visitors to Ireland do it to ensure their safty while traveling through the country. Effectively the chief would be mothering the supplicant.
As anyone else heard of this practice?

No, but American visitors to London in the 1960s were encouraged to try the famous echo in the British Museum reading room!
