What is it?
A firing mechanism for muskets that came after matchlocks and before flintlocks. Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

Hi Irhist.
Unless its completely out of context I have only ever come across it in English as a kind of firing mechanisim for muskets and pistols as the lad above says an early kind of flintlock.
It might be something else in Gaelic. In which case I cant help you.
Let us know how you get on.
For some reason the Socts preferred it to the flintlock well into the 18th century.
