    Just wondering,

If you're talking about the mini-series last year (series two coming soon BTW), then I liked it. I thought it was pretty well researched, and well written. The two main characters, Pullo and Vorenus were apparently real people, they were mentioned being under Caesar's command, and apparently fought a duel at Alesia which was rudely interrupted by the Gauls.

Also the realism of the life of the average Roman seemed pretty accurate, although contemporary accounts of life as a Plebeian are quite hard to find. On the whole, I was impressed, and looking forward to the next series. Must be about time for the civil war between Anthony and Octavian?

I wonder if the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will cut the new series like they did the last one, just in case it is too intelectual for the British public. smiley - sadface

    Colquhoun,

They probably will, but then it's easy enough to get the uncut HBO version on DVD.

You've obviously heard a differest story to me - I understood it had been cut because there was a lot of background guff which the Beeb thought the British public would already be familiar with.

Alternatively, maybe they just cut the ad breaks? That's the reason why the twenty-four hours of '24' only amounted to about 18 hours in the UK, apparently.

The politics of 'Rome' was okay, and it was nice to see Rome looking pretty authentic (dirty, graffitied and painted as opposed to the usual sparkling white marble), but the costumes and equipment of the army... oh dear. Nice hamata (mail), but the helmets, pila, shields and swords all varied from poor to ghastly, the tunics with eagles emblazoned on them were odd, to say the least. And whistles. Vorenus in bizarre hybrid armour, bits of which were about three hundred years apart. I know I witter on about this sort of thing, rather, but given that the Roman Army must be one of the most extensively researched aspects of history, with good, cheap, up to date books on the subjectr available from any half decent bookshop, not to mention hoards of re-enactors, you'd think they could get it right!

I watched the series "Rome" and enjoyed it...

I was also taken aback by certian things, like the eagles on the tunics etc., but on the whole, it was very enticing, I never missed a programme. I would sacrifice a little bit of historical accuracy for the greater plot or storyline...

That said, eagerly anticipating the next season. We'll probably get it late here in SA though.

Sacrificing quite a big bit of historical accuracy for no obvious reason, though...

    Not a patch on "I,Claudius".

I found "Rome" boring and gave up after the Battle of Pharsalus was more or less side stepped.
