Hello,
I'm new to the message board and the study of ancient history. However I'm currently trying to find my way around the roman campaigns in Britain. In particular I really want to read more about Caratacus.
I have Graham Webster's book "Rome against Caratacus" but could anyone recommend any other books or good information sources regarding Caratacus?
Grateful for any help that can be provided....
Hi Tincommius,
I don't know that a huge amount is known about Caratacus, or any individual Iron Age British ruler. If, on the other hand, you want a refreshing new approach to the interaction between Britain and Rome in the century 50 BC to AD 50 may I recommend 'Britannia' by John Creighton, published in 2006. A very stimulating read indeed.
Best wishes,
TP
If you haven't already, try one of the key primary sources: 'The Agricola and the Germania' by Tacitus. It contains the famous oration about Rome 'giving to rape, plunder and conquest the lying name of freedom.' To the Welsh Cartacus is known and celebrated by his Brythonic name of Caradog: he lives on still, causing many to shed a bitter tear on the day of his feasting at the way the Britons were treated.
Thanks very much - will look to do so and maybe follow up
Thank you this is very helpful - any other useful sources?
