Hi everybody. I just want to ask one question. I am in year 11 now and next year, when I start my A Levels, I am hoping to do Geography, History, RE and English Literature.

I would like to do an archaeology degree afterwards. Are these A level subjects ok or are there subjects I should do instead of one of the above.

I would be grateful for your advice smiley - smiley. Thanks!

Hi luna and welcome to the boards.

The A levels you've put sound fine. I would also think about science, esp. if you are hoping to do some archaeological conservation work.

The best advise I could give tho' is to get out on some voluntary digs. There are usually some running in Britain (assuming that's where you are) at all times. A lot of them require only enthusiasm. It will give you not only invaluable experience but also a better chance at interview!

    Good luck

    Hi luna-dragon,

I'm sure that you'll never regret studying archaeology at university. It is truly fascinating. Frankly almost any skill or qualification (not necessarily even an academic one) can be put to use in archaeology.

In the UK there may actually be more university places to study archaeology than there are applicants. In the end I guess few students with reasonable A-levels (especially if they have some practical experience as already recommended) are unable to find a place. Finding a job three or four years later is admittedly harder.

The situation is slightly different if you have a particular university in mind (espcially an ivy-clad institution)in which case you must check their entry requirements and get the best grades you can.

History and Geography (particularly is you can squeeze in some geology) seem very appropriate A-levels. As you will have gathered archaeology is very science based these days. As well as scientific dating, there is a great use made of instrumental analysis, and geophysics. On the biological side there is environmental archaeology and osteoarchaeology, to name but two. Undeniably Maths (Statistics), Chemistry or Biology would also be very useful A-levels to a future archaeologist. I also know of very happy and successful archaeologists with first degrees in physics or materials science who switched to archaeology at masters level.

Good luck with whatever you select,

    TP

I would not wish to put you off studying archaeology but I hope you are well aware that if you were to get a job in archaeology, it is unlikely to be well paid. I am an engineer, and that is not that well paid either, but we employ archaeolists when we are carrying out pipeline relays and, for a qualified person, the rates are very low.
