I just decided to ask if anyone would like a chat about Tutankhamun and Egypt in general. Anything about Egypt, i'll talk about it.

Hi there.
I saw a programee on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ2 last night - journeys from the centre of the earth, that examined the geology behind classical buildings. The presenter put forward the theory on the hypostyle chambers of the great temples such as Karnak. he proposed that the multitude of columns was less to do with religious concepts and supposed representations of a'primeval swamp' and more to do with the inherent properties of the materials used.
The columns were made from sandstone, which is fine under compression, but cannot support weight above it, ie. a large roof. He then went on to talk about marble in Greece and volcanic ash in Rome.
When I did my degree I was taught that the hypstyle columns were because of this idea of a primeval swamp. Having never visited Egypt I just swallowed what I was told by my lerned tutors. It was enlightening and thought provoking to see the temples from a different point of view.
It made me wonder what other tosh is being peddled out in the name of education.

"When I did my degree..."
Just out of interest, where did you do your degree?
Liverpool Uni. Mid 90's. Why do you ask?
I took my son to Egypt several years ago. We went to the Valley of Kings. It was an experiance I shall never forget.
For easy reading that provides some insight into the 19th dysnasty - read Christian Jacq "Stone of light" series. They are not heavyweight egyptology tomes and may be scoffed at by scholars but they are a nice easy read (fiction based on real events and people)which will whet your appetite for more.
Im doing an in depth study of the New Kingdom and I am studying Egyptian Language. You need a lot of dedication for the Language course as it is very difficult but its really enjoyable!
any news on the tomb they found across from his tomb in the valley of the kings as last i heard they thought it might contain his wife and possibly his baby.
Hey thanks for everyones replies, there has been no other recent updates about kv64, there have been no actual mummies found, just a seal with 'pa-aten' on and a childs coffin and other funeral equipment. I believe that the coffins were those of the six sisters, Nefertiti and Akenatens daughters, anyone go any opinions on what they think the cache is? And who was it for?

Hi There, I have just returned from Egypt for the 12th time. I cannot get enough of the place. They have just found a new mummy and the mummy of a donkey this week under the old village of Gourna on the West Bank of the Nile. when I was there at New Year I met Kent Weeks the Egyptologist who is excavating KV5. He was in the same restaurant as us and let us have a photo taken with him. Very nice man. Read his book The Lost Tomb. Very good. Have been back down to Aswan this time to Elephantine Island and Nubian Museum. Abu simbal is an amazing experience as well. Luxor is the best place to be based. Wonderful place I will be there again as soon as possible.
How are you learning your Egyptian Language. I am having trouble locating a course. PLenty of Arabic courses but not Egyptian Arabic. I could do with a course I can study at home. I go to Egypt regularly and am trying to pick things up as I go. Any info would be appreciated. Shokran.

I got the impression that Message 7 was about heiroglyphs - I had excellent fun learning enough to get by! However, if you do go to Egypt quite a bit, there is a bookshop in Luxor next door to the Winter Palace (out the front door and turn right, and called Aboudy), and I have often seen audio 'teach yourself Egyptian Arabic' CDs and so on in there. If not, I'm sure they will know where you can get one! The other place to try is the American University in Cairo bookshop. I also note that the Rough Guide Egyptian Arabic phrasebook also comes with links to download the phrases at spoken by Egyptians - but I haven't tried it, so can't rate it one way or the other.

Yes, but there's nothing like the first time you go over there, and you understand at least some of what's written on the wall or the column for yourself.
Ankhesenamun1506,
Perhaps you will be interested in this; the exhibit, may next be headed for Philadelphia:

Ankhesenamum, are you sure you mean KV64 and not KV63!? i have been following closely the excavation of KV63 which was found early this year, KV64 hasn't even been started yet! The Armarna Royal Tombs Project (ARTP) has so far used Ground Penetrating Radar to determine the location and probable size of KV64, it is an image that has caused much excitement because it's radiating arcs indicate a void,- a tomb.
We'll just have to wait to see when the ARTP decide to start excavation of KV64.
