Can anyone help me. I have heard of places in the UK that have people dressed up as Romans. They have forts and arenas etc.

Does anyone know of any good places to visit, just to get an idea of what it was like in ancient Roman times.

Please let me know what you thought of the sites that you have seen in the UK.

Just to let you know. I have been to Israel three times and every time I've visited a place called Beit Shea'n. It was a huge Roman city that Hadrian stayed in and other great rulers of Rome. Also Alexander the Great visited there and one of the ancient pharohs. I saw evidence of their statues and fantastic finds at the huge site and it is huge with ancient markets, temples, theatres, hippas and arenas. If you want to know more about this ancient city, just ask.

    Hi JOXER1983,

Have a look at this link from ARLT (The Association for Latin Teaching)*

It gives a list of UK re-enactment groups, and also a link to a site where you should be able to get to each group's website. By the looks of it, they often have re-enactments at Roman sites of interest. I haven't seen any of them so can't advise you how good they are.

Beit Shea'n sounds impressive - I think the Romans might have called it "Scythopolis" as that was the Greek name, but I could be wrong. I don't suppose you have any good links about the place?

    Cheers,

    RF

    * I'm still trying to work out what the "R" stands for in ARLT... smiley - winkeye

    Thanks for the information.
If you would like to know more about the city. And it's greek name is Scythopolis. Then go to www.bibleplaces.com
or just type in Scythopolis or Beit shea'n and click on search for pictures and you will see many photographs of the site. There is a programme in the summer when you can go out there and help them to dig. But it's a pay your own way thing.
When you see the photo of the ancient city, you will see that alot more has to be found. They have only discovered a small fraction of what was a huge city. It was by accident that they even found it. They were building something nearby and hit a pillar. Hundreds of years ago a massive earthquake struck the city and it was fully covered in mud, it just looked like a few hill mounds.
If anyone wants to go I would advise you not to go with a tour operator. I did and like most they only give you and hour in Beit Shea'n. And they spend more than half of that at the theatre, telling you what you can read for yourself. Mine wasn't too pleased with me because I asked if I could split and look around. He agreed, and while I had a great time exploring the site, the rest of the group were stuck with him. So every time I go now, I just get a bus from Tel-Aviv to Afula then get a taxi to Beit shea'n. It is so simple and alot cheaper to do. In the spring I'm going back and then I will visit Masada for the first time.

    Hello Joxer,
there are several re-enactment groups that do Roman re-enactment. Off hand I can think of Regio Angelorum and the Ermine Street Guard. Other names elude me at present. However if you type in Re-enactment on a search engine you should come up with loads of different groups. I myself do medieval re-enactment and it is great1
