I find it hard to take in that the Romans didn't come to Ireland. I have a map that shows Roman camps in Scotland and at least two are only around 20 miles from the Ulster shore line in Ireland. It would only take a few hours to cross over to Ireland.
Also I have heard that 15 miles north of Dublin, a Roman fort has been found. But the finds are not for the public to see. Is this a rumour or the truth.
I would like to hear the publics views. Did the Romans invade Ireland?

    Hi Joxer,

I believe not. I've not read a detailed published account of the presumed Roman site but I understand that it is highly doubtful as a fort. Far fewer examples of Roman material culture have been found in Ireland than in non-Roman sites in Scotland. Roman fortresses and forts are easy to spot from Aerial Photographs so it it is very hard to accept that undiscovered military bases and roads survive undetected in the soil.

On the other hand the Roman governor Agricola did at least consider invading Ireland (according to Tacitus). One possible reason that the legionary bases at Chester is so huge is that it was considered as a storage base for an Irish invasion.

    Hi Joxer,

Something weird is happening. My reply to your question appears, and then disappears. I've sent it twice and am hoping for the best. A reply from Dark Kitten appears to be affected in the same way so I don't think that it's my computer.

Sorry, I'm only firing on one cylinder today. You've posted the same question on history and archaeology & ancient. Be careful; I'm very easily confused!
