Distance/Online learning

  Hi,
  Hoping that someone can help me on this. I am looking to start either an archaeology degree or ancient history/archaeology degree online in UK if possible but having difficult finding a variety of options. Think Leicester University offer Certificate/Diploma but not full blown degree (do you need to do Cert. first?), but cannot find anything else. .
  Has anyone got any advise or experience of searching for this? (p.s. I want to do this part-time an remain in full time employment).

  The Open University have several courses in ancient history. Not sure about archaeology. You can get a degree from the OU once you complete enough courses. It's not all on-line bu it is distance learning and can be done in your spare time - as long as you have a fair amount of spare time. They recommend 16 hours per week.

  A friend of mine is doing a part time archaeology degree at York university, will take her 6 years I think.

  Many universities award transferable credit for courses taken with them and this credit can then be transferred into another university as part of an award like a certificate or degree. It's always up to the receiving university to determine suitability etc. how much transfereed credit to accept and to check that you are not credited with the same learning twice of course. The OU accept transferable credit as do the Continuing Education Departments at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
  
  Here at the Institute of Continuing Education in Cambridge, www.cont-ed.cam.ac.uk we have just launched an eLearning programme, CE at Oxford have been running a few courses for some years now. One of our first offerings is Ancient Rome, the city, society and infrastructure taught by Dr Philip Matyszak. The course makes good use of both modern research and original sources and is designed to complement other studies of Roman history by putting events in Rome in their physical context, creating an appreciation of a living, working (and incredibly ethnically diverse) city. It might be an interesting place to start your studies, or to complement other approaches.

  Thank you all for the replies recieved so far. I very much appreciate the time people have put in to replying.
  Particularly interested in what Dr Lynne H. says about transferrable credits. Is there a time limit on how long these credits can be used? I have some already from Liverpool University from a few years back.
  If anyone else has even more information or further on what has already been supplied this would also be very much appreciated.
  In the meantime there certainly seems to be some starting points.
