The authors of the original article [P Brown et al 2006] proposed that LB1 was a new species "Homo floresiensis".A recent article by T Jacobs et al [2006] credibly contends that LB1 should be classified as Homo sapiens. All of the 94 features of the LB1 cranium,The 46 traits on the two LB mandibles and their dentation lies within the range of native Australians and tha small Rampasasa people of Flores Island. The brain size and stature of LB1 did not develop to their full potential, because of a medical condition, which is still equivocal.

Yeah, critics have been saying the skull is the result of micro encephalisation as opposed to a new sub species since the excavators went public. I gather the identified pelvis bone doesn't look like an anatomically modern humans at all and is considerably wider than one would expect within the standard range of modern females. Further as I understand they have found limbs from more than one individual and the upper limbs are longer in comparison to modern human norms especially given this was a more tropical climate. Not to mention the difference in the shape of molars found in the Liang Bau caves and those in modern humans. I think the comments on skull shape and size are drawing attention from other features of the morphology of these specimins that suggest they are a seperate subclass of hominim and not an isolated population of moderns. We see apparent sophistication in style of tools but no sign of cultural or symbolic activity that one would expect if these were moderns as at Wharton Hill, Olary Province South Australia that provide dates of more than fortytwo thousand years.
