According to ...
The 1870 USA census ...
From 1860 to 1870 -- 2,658 Portuguese people entered the country legally during this decade .
~
Do any of you have any decendents or relatives that are alive today from that period of time ?
And if any of them were forced to change their last name for any reason what so ever because of any discrimination that was being used against them to pressure any one as being American so as to fit in their ethno-centered Anglo-Saxon communities that existed in United States of America at the time .
Do you have a story to tell ?
Well lets hear it !
Do YOU have a story to tell, Eddie Rabbit ?
I'll just go and ask my great great grandfather he is only 132, I am not sure if I will get much of an answer though.
"One of the noticeable characteristics of Portuguese immigrants in the USA is their very restricted need to interact outside their own ethnic group. Especially after 1870 when the Portuguese immigrant communities in the USA attained a sizeable base that was able to absorb increasing numbers of newcomers. This would obviously reduce the need for social interaction with English native speakers"
Why is is that even today the Portuguese immigrants generally have very little enthusiasm to mix with the the local population? They are also very keen to flag up various human right issues yet their native country is not up to speed with the rest of Europe in this respect, the word hypocritical springs to mind.
everything about the usa is hypocritical, there has never been one native american president of the usa and evert time some one from the indians there tried to get onvolved in politics the government ran illegal campaings against them.

Send for the "Terminator" oops California got him first.
To try and keep this related to the board, I am not sure the attributes of the ancient native indians would be suitable for an International player like the USA. Imagine a President that sends in the troops when any country defies their own ethos, it surely would end in disaster.
Errr is it not about time the USA had a native President !
How would this be any different from those immigrants to Brasil with Irish, German and Anglican names that were made to sound more Portuguese?
In the 19th Century, most cultures did not have the same attitudes on how to create a diverse society as is popular in the 21st.
In 1859 ...
The discovery of pretroleum in Pennsylvania caused the American whaling industry to begin to decline .

and other fish in California was introduced --
changing the fishing industry in America for ever ...
Azoreans were very involved in the the canned fish industry by the 1880s .
In 1863 ...
Carlos the first - King of Portugal was born and died in 1908 .
In 1864 ...
Maria Loriana Cunha -- thought to have been the first Luso woman to arrive in Hawaii -- was issued a pass port in Horta - Azores .
