I have an assignment to try to find the reason that the Pyramids were built, whether in Egypt or else where. I have heard for storage, and also that they were the stairway to the stars or heaven.
Phillip
the pyrmaids were built to put dead people in.thats what they were.tombs of the pharoes, there are plenty of good posts on egypt on this board.
The pyramids on the Giza plateau inc the grate pyramid of khufu were the culmination of tomb biulding that seems to have first appeared as what were known as mastabas, from the earliest flowerings of Egyptian culture. The mastabas were basically stone or mud brick biuldings which were tombs for wealthy individuals, often with a vertical shaft that held the corpse. These got more sophisticated until the early kings developed them into the various step pyramids (such as those erected by Djose, ). The kings of the 4th dynsaty in the old kingdom further enhanced these esp. Snefru, and his son Khufu had the great pyramid erected.
thegoodbadugly is right, they were basically tombs for the kings (pharoahs).
Who on earth told you they were built for storage?
Stairways to the stars is more accurate. The constellation where the star Sirus is.
thank you generallobus, they were tombs with slits in them that pointed to certain stars, thats all they were i have heard every cockamamie theroy on the pyramids there is,all wrong, they have found a new tomb with 9 different caskets in it and they think that it is tutnkamuns wife who was murdered and buried quickly.the time of the tomb builders was the golden age of egypt and the world has not seen anything like since i would have liked to have lived there at that time.
either tombs or they were built so the egyptians would have somewhere to sit in the shade.
What cheese me off is the theories that the pyramids must have been built by aliens or some uberculture that existed before the ice age and has long gone leaving only traces of Graham Hancock lying around. It's as if the Egyptians were'nt skilled or intelligent enough themselves. What tosh. there's little to rival the Giza plateau anywhere on the planet. I'm just in awe of them and I don't need any magic or diabolical intervention to be able to appreciate just what a monumental human task they were. (pun intended)
I think there was a biblical theory that they were grain stores built by Abraham but I could be just speculating wildly on that one.
Hi Annhawks
I think they were most probably tombs. The evidence for this comes from further south in Nubia. When the Egyptian refugees fled the Hyksos they took their pyramid building with them to Nubia but on a much smaller scale. And these were all tombs. The body though I think was was buried beneath.
There's a whole load of stuff on this very site that will inform and enlighten you as to your questions or your speculations.

The pyramids were tombs for the kings, and they were developed from earlier mastabas. Some Egyptologists believe that the pyramids represent the primeval mound that rose from Nun (the primeval waters) to create Egypt
very interesting site is the National Geigraphic site on pyramids
they are at this moment investigating a new site of the villages of the pyramid builders they were not all impressed slaves as at first thought
... the pyramid, for the early metal-working era engineers, was simply the most obvious way to built a really large building that can stand the test of time. Hence you find it all over the world and not only in Egypt and Americas but pretty much all over the world.

Although I disagree with Hancock's assumption that there was an 'uberculture' responsible for the flowering of civilisation, I do however feel that there is ovewhelming evedence that human civilisation is a lot older than is currentyly accepted by orthodox archeology.
