I am a farmer and have discovered something interesting on our land.

There is a chamber that is approx 8' long x 3' wide and maybe 6-7' deep.It is constructed out of faced stone and is covered by stone slabs for a least three quarters of the length and the rest is covered by timber that looks as if it is more recent. We discovered a hole in the timber that may have been caused by a cow putting it's foot through. The whole thing is about 18" under the surface. The field has been cultivated for many years.

I have taken some pictures by holding the camera down through the hole.

Any suggestions as to the age or purpose of the site would be interesting.

    Thanks

    Funny little place.

Could it be a bomb shelter ? It is difficult to put an age on stone I think.

Perhaps you should try sending the pictures to the county archaeologist

Looks interesting. Would be interesting to see the land around to see how the chamber relates to it. That could help find what it is. Looking at it on a computer screen it looks recent. It doesn't look like any kind of prehistoric tomb I've seen in Britain, but thats my thought. What about everybody else?
Follow Tim's excellent tip though contact your county archaeologist. Good luck I hope its something interesting for you.

Intriguing stuff, some photos giving situation would help, but I suspect it's probably quite modern.

It looks suspiciously to me like a water tank, part of a field drainage system and a wooden roof or support suggests it is very modern.

County Archaeologist is sound advice, or if you don't want to go to that trouble give the library a call and see if they can put you in touch with the local history/archaeology group. They'll be only too glad to take a look and see if it's worth investigating.

    Thank you for your replies.

I think it is unlikely to be a bomb shelter given it's location(and construction). When you say very modern what do you mean? I don't think it could have been constructed in the last 50 years.

My first thoughts were of a drainage man hole type chamber but there are no signs of any entry or exit points at least not down to the level visable. However the site is located in a dip within the field.

A water tank is possible but it is in the middle of a field away from any buildings so that doesn't really add up.

I'll get in touch with the County Archaeologist.

    Cheers!

    Hi Shottle,

A chamber in a dip in a field is likely to be for drainage purposes, particularly if its been used as arable land rather than grazing. (not that I know much about farming!!) The history of the farm itself may give you clue as to the age of this chamber.

Perhaps you could give us your result if you find out anymore.

    All the best

    Dan
