I am hoping to gain archaeological experience as i am thinking about applying to an Archaeology course at uni. Where would I go to find placements availible? Would my county/district counsil be the starting place?

I am going to Vindolanda Roman Fort near Hadrian's wall to do a volunteer dig this summer. They accept volunteers of any or no experience between April and September each year. You can find them through a web search for the Vindolanda Trust. For general information on volunteer work and work experience you could find information from the following website:

Hope this helps and good luck with your studies,
    Kate.

You could always contact your local authority, most of them have an archaeologist in residence.

I did this prior to beginning uni last year and have volunteered on a number of digs and gained a lot of experience and knowledge that you simply can't learn in the lecture theatre.

Most digs I have been on have been conducted by independent archaeological companies working on behalf of the local authority, so I suppose you could try contacting any companies in your area and advising of your willingness to volunteer.

There is a training dig in York this summer run by York Archaeological Trust. The site is within the ancient city walls and contains remains from the Roman, Anglian, Anglo-Scandinavian and Medieval occupation.

I've participated in YAT's training digs before and they are brilliant for anyone and everyone - whether you want to go to Uni, are already at Uni, want to be a field archaeologist or just want to have a go at digging as a hobby or holiday type thing. The training is top notch, with a very good social side too.

More details are on the YAT training dig website

Ooooo! That is the dig I am going on this summer smiley - biggrin! I can't wait to go. Oh yeah, keep checking currentarchaeology.co.uk. They are meant to be updating the digs page on there soon.
