Hello, I am new to this website as I am only 14 and just got the internet. I really want to be an archaeologist when I grow up. I've wanted to ever since I saw INdiana Jones (kidding though I do like those movies). I would like to know the best ways to become and archaeologist and I've always wanted to know if having an artistic ability helps in any way. Plus I would like to know the civilizations archaeologists around the world are most focused on. As for me, I prefer the Greeks and Egyptians. Mainly I like mythology.

Are you a member of the Young Archaeologists Club? If not look at their website britarch.ac.uk/yac/. Also look at the messages on this board about studying archeology at uni. Finally before you make any decision you must go on a training dig. It is hard work, not at all glamourous and don't commit yourself to anything before you know that it is for you.

Hi! Im 14 too and I want to be an archaeologist when I grow up too. I would recommend joining the Young Archaeologists Club. I've just joined and its great! You get 4 magazines a year, filled with news on archaeological digs etc. Also you get a membership card which gives you free or discounted prices to certain museems. Also, you can find out about the nearest young archaelogists club to you which you can then go to meetings with people your age and do loads of cool activities. I havent been on an archaeological dig yet, but I think im going on one later this year! Artistic ablity is useful but I dont think its essential (I cant draw!). Hope you've found this useful!

Wow, that is really lucky to find a dig at your age! What excavation are you thinking of taking part in then? The majority of digs wont let you participate until you are at least 16. I was going to go on one last year when I had just gone 16 but I left it too late. My advice is get it sorted early. You usually have to book a place. I am going on a training dig at the beginning of August. The only thing with training digs though is that you have to pay for tuition and it can be quite pricey.
Yes artistic ability is useful in archaeology (e.g for archaeological drawing and photography). It doesn't really matter what a-levels you do to study archaeology at university. I do VCE art in my sixth form and a level biology. I do photography in my course which will be useful. -

We always do U.S. History so I always have to go to the library and read articles on the web for my favorite areas. My mom wants me to be an artist because I can sketch cartoons and stuff. But history is just so awesome!

I never bothered with history at my school. The course that they offered and the way they taught it was incredibly dull. I prefer ancient history to modern history so I learn about ancient civilisations in my own time. I am currently doing a home learning Egyptology course. Thankfully history isn't required to study archaeology else I would be in a bit of a pickle wouldn't I.
