I'm fairly new to this so excuse my ignorance!

I read somewhere, either in a book or on some wacky website, that the corrosion and damage found on the Sphinx was caused by water. This article stated that geologists had no problem with this and accepted the theory, but that Egyptologists say it is impossible.

I've also heard that the Sphinx is actually a lot older than the Egyptologists think and pre-dates the pyramids by a good few thousand years.

I've heard and read about numerous theories about the pyramids as well, ranging from the totally wacky to the almost believable.

I'm really interested in Egypt and mysteries and all, but I'm neither an Egyptologist nor a geologist nor any other -gist and there seem to be a great many 'conspiracy theories' out there!

Could anyone help me separate the fact from the fiction? Recommend good books or reliable websites, or just explain things to me a bit?

interesting fact that wohn't help but will intrigue... many people believe that one of the Sphinx's paws' are hollow and contain something but they dont want to damage the sphinx so they wont drill in it...

Alot of the Eqyptology is changing at the moment, as they have to incorprate the works of geologists etc.

It is quite possible fir the damage to be water, this is back up by herodotus who mentions that it rained in periods like the amazon does now. It is also possible that the oils the splinx was painted (it was painted in bright colours, a look very unlike our traditional view) could have a water base and that may have damaged it too.

On the dates, all the reliable people that have carbon dated it say it is from the same quarry as the pyramids adjacent to the Splinx therefore dating it to the same point in time.

The suspected sphinx image which you speak of is actually on Mars. When photographed from a different angle it turned out to be an optical illusion formed by a shadow on a natural rock formation.

Erm, well Herodotus actually mentions there is no rainfall in the Nile valley and thus wondered where the annual inundation came from. In fact he seems to have thought it odd that they did not rely on rain for their agriculture and wrote down the idea that the Nile agriculture was the easy life as the river did all the hard work. As such Herodotus also maintains that Egyptian civilisation went back 9000 years before his time when according to modern geological surveys the nile valley would have been wetter and subject to seasonal rainfall. That seems a long way from suggesting the Sphynx was constructed during this period however. As nothing else backs up Herodotus' assertions about the temple priests at Heliopolis I think it is a mistake to use him in justifying the age of the Sphynx.

On the other hand the sphynx has been buried under snad on several occasions. It has also been subject to millennia of morning dues and nightime frosts.

Thanks for the information. I knew that image was somewhere. However I find it interesting that it a could be shadow by a natural rock formation.

Wonder what elsee will turn up next?

The Sphinx water idea is one of those batty ideas which turns up and refuses to die. A Google search for the Hall of Maat will hopefully show you an article which shreds the person who made the claim and their idea.

The sphynx is just another peice of the puzzle or the legend of the ancient eygptians.
I mean, last time I checked, they didn't even know who the sphnyxs face was...
