    Hi all,

Can anybody recommend any books that are suitable for an absolute beginner to latin? Nothing too heavy, and ideally something that I won't lose interest in. Oh, and most importantly a paperback so I can read it in the bath... smiley - biggrin

    Thanks,

    RF

    Hi RF

Teach Yourself Beginner's Latin is good non-heavy introduction to Latin which I have used and still dip into from time to time. It's certainly not as heavy as its sister book Teach Yourself Latin. It's paperback too!

I managed to pick up a very old second-hand copy of Erasmus' mediaeval teach-yourself-Latin book with English help...bit of an oddity, but strangely enough it reflects modern teaching methods quite closely.

No pictures of mice in it though smiley - sadface

    Hi there,

I learned Latin at 16, and found the Oxford University Press texts absolutely wonderful--they provide an entertaining storyline in which is incorporated new vocabularly, and gradually grammar. Lots of pics too! They are paperback (not too thick either), and I believe there are 3 parts in the 'set' at around Β£15 each.

If you look for 'Oxford Latin Course' books (Maurice Balme et al) on the OUP website, you should find them okay. Hope this helps and 'bona fortuna'!
