I'm not totally convinced that Romans actually existed. All these TV shows about ancient Roman burial sites etc seem a little bit 'staged'. How come they always find "the rib if a Roman thug" or "a chisel used by a Roman stone merchant" but never find nothing?!
I could be wrong but i think Tony Robinson from Time Team is having a laugh. Sorry guys
Excellent post.....and what a fantastic name. Straight into the Top Ten.
I am sure that if you dig in a burial site you will find that something has been buried. Hence the name. That's probably why they always find something when they dig.
Interesting post, though. Certainly got me thinking. Who do you suppose built Hadrian's Wall or the Colosseum?
Quite right!
They were made up by the same people who faked the moon landings!
Well spotted.
Who do you suppose built Hadrian's Wall or the Colosseum?

Set builders from Channel 4
Seriously, though, I have heard that they send people to the site in advance to make certain that there is something to find, although I'm not entirely convinced that that is true. I'm sure that once or twice they haven't come up with much (though that could be deliberate to throw us off the scent, of course!!), but I suppose generally there must be a reasonable chance of them finding something, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered digging at that site in the first place.

What do you call the ancient inhabitants of Rome?
Who built the Colliseum?
Who created the Roman Empire?
Who originated and spoke Latin?
Who created the corpus of Roman literature?
Who crucified Jesus?
Who was Julius Caeser? and did he ever come to Britain?
With whom did Carthage fight the Punic Wars?
Who built Trajan's Column? or Hadrian's Wall?
.. I could be wrong .... Ìý
I'm afraid so!

They don't necessarily find anything of huge interest or importance, but the sites are well researched and surveyed before Time Team actually get involved.
I think Tony Robinson looks at it largely from the TV production point of view (keep it interesting and watchable), whereas the Archaeologists are frustrated that they have to do so much so quickly, when a proper excavation is usually a very time consuming task.

Ignoring the original poster's premise that Romans never colonised Britain (a bit of a wind-up, I imagine) I take the point however about Channel 4's Time Team and its vulnerability to criticism.
It's a programme I have always enjoyed tremendously, but as a person with a great love for archaeology I have always found its format a little disconcerting. I have no doubt that the archaeologists involved are honourable and intelligent, and skilled at their craft. I would suggest however that the enforced "game show" feel to proceedings will inevitably give rise to suspicions about its authenticity, and allow sceptics (and ignoramuses) a free range to concoct fanciful (and in the case of the first poster, downright stupid) interpretations of both the programme and the history it unearths.
I may be watching a different programme to the original poster, but to me TT demonstrates with commendable regularity just how little can be achieved in a dig when limited to three working days, however eager and able the archaeologists involved might be!
Re: Message 8.
Nordmann,
by a contributor Brigantes on this board and the protecting of the "henges" in his neighbourhood, I saw the similarity of a "henge" here in the neighbourhood of Bruges (Belgium) and by the conversation about it with him, I became interested (not involved, no time(smile)) in the archaeology and by that I became a subscriber to the Brugean Archaeological Research and receive now every week an article about their excavations and the items surrounding it.
And I have to say that I fully support and completely agree with all what you said.
Warm regards.
Thats someone who winds up the footy messageboard too, don't rise to it!

you know the answer to at least two of your questions is not the romans!

??
Which two?
The Latin language? Which was probably first spoken by the Latin Tribes of Italy who were then conquered by Rome. And who crucified Jesus? I suppose you could argue it was the Jewish authorities who ordered it, but it would still have been approved, overseen and carried out by the Romans.

Why the past tense? The Romans still exist, they live in a city called Rome

I agree with TonyG, who do you think built all these ancient ruins and artefacts etc. Maybe you should try visiting Rome itself!
Turn the question round as Monty Python put it "What have the Romans ever done for us ?"
Apart from the roads...!
Besides building the coloseum and making Rome a tourist attraction?
