Mancala, is traceable to ancient Egyptian times. I've just come across one explanation that the game symbolises cattle raiding (at least this is the interpretation of several contemporary African communities). I wondered whether this game came as far as 'British Isles' - the concept would have been understandable. Does anyone have any information re: games and pass times in prehistoric 'Britain'?

I don't think it came as far as the British Isles but from what I've read I believe it did reach Eastern Europe. I haven't heard of the cattle raiding symbolism behind the game, I always assumed it was a re-enactment of sowing seeds. A good place to start would be <>. This sites provides some very good links.
