I'm new to this part of the message boards,i usually post on the football boards.I was wondering if any of you lot could point me in the direction of any good books charting human occupation in the British Ilses from the Lower Palaeolithic to the Roman invasion? I am particularly interested in the Palaeo,Meso and neolithic ages.Thanks.

    Hiya,

Stone Age to Roman Invasion.... Quite a time period..

    I would suggest:

Prehistoric Britain by Timothy Darvill (ISBN: 0-7134-5180-7)

    British Prehistory by C Renfrew

National Trust - the site books that they publish are very good - ie Danebury, Henges etc

Romanization of Britain by Martin Millett (ISBN 0-521-42864-5)

    Hope that helps

    Re: message 2.

    Euergetes,

"I am graduated 10 years ago from the university of Birmingham after studying Ancient History&Archaeology"

"I'm rather wary of the Ancient History messageboard-too many "alternative" and weird ideas for my liking"

Euergetes, I would have expected that such an erudite would have tried to correct the people with their "alternative" and weird ideas? After all an honest and erudite debate is always very interesting on these history boards. And if you join, I at least will always try to understand what you mean and reply according to my capacities. So, out of the discussion, I have learned at these boards that there always emerges a "broader" picture, which is of interest for all, including those with their weird ideas...in my humble opinion.

Warm regards and welcome to the boards.

Thanks, but i do already have the first 2 books.
Will look into the National Trust books, but find they are often scant on interesting facts. They often appear more targeted at the general enthusiast,as opposed to the more interested. Thanks for your time to reply. Hiya,

    Hi
Depends where your heart really lies. And how far you wish to see the evolution of archaeology.

You really can't go wrong with the following,
    Derek Roe for the Pal
Renfrew, Bradley and Darvill for the Neo

    Parker Pearson for the Bronze

And for the Romans, well, millions, Wacher, Salway, Birley, Booth, Millet the list goes on.

Really though, rather than look for an all encompassing, which will only have more gaps than plugs, you should take the best of each period. Wymer for instance for the Mesolithic - which is essential if you want to study the Neolithic. If you live in a university town then ask at there online libraries. If not then see Oxbow books either online or via mail order. It shouldn't be too expensive to identify the texts you need and then buy them from Ebay or Amazon.
