Great weren't they? Leonidas what a guy. Anyway:

If not them, who would you want at your side from the realms of ancient history in a battle?

    Also what's your favourite primate?

The Romans of course. No one else was as efficient at killing as the ever practical Romans. They turned death and mayhem into an engineering problem.

Fav Primate has got to be the Saxon smiley - winkeye

Depends what you mean by "great". Spartan society was built on slavery and atrocities carried out against neighbouring states. The life of a Spartan man was one of total war - taken away from parents at an early age, submitted to a brutal, loveless up-bringing, then sent off to war where he'd probably die before he could marry and settle down. Spartan society broke down boys and made them into mindless killing machines. There are stories of Spartans going to live in other cities and going mad because they couldn't cope with the freedoms of normal everyday life. Sparta would have been a miserable place to live.

However, if I needed military allies in the ancient world, then Spartans would be potential, but I'd probably opt for the Romans. Rome lost [plenty of battles, but the ability to recruit and equip yet another army when all seemed lost was awesome. A defeat like Cannae would have spelt the end for almost every other society in the ancient world, yet Rome went on to take another sound beating at Lake Trasimene and then still commit armies to the conquest of Spain and Syracuse.

    Favourite primate? Probably Thomas Cranmer.
