I recently went on a visit to the british museum for the very first time. It was fantastic!!!

the egypt exibit certainly lived up to expectations, and surpassed them!!

i also enjoyed the roman and sutton Hoo galleries.

has anyone else been? (silly question really)
or looking to go, any opinions and information are most welcome!!!

    best,
    hathor

    Hi Hathor

Yep, I've been there quite a few times - it's my favourite museum in London and think it's great. It's one of those places that you can't hope to see everything in one (or two) visits.

It is even more beautiful since the Central Court was completed and opened up a fantastic open space.

Other than the Central Court, I always seem to gravitate towards the Rosetta Stone to begin with (language and linguisitics being a favourite subject of mine) and then upstairs to the Anglo-Saxon and Roman areas. That said, I recently discovered the Akkadian/Sumerian area which is really interesting - loads of large tablets and carvings with cuneiform carved all over them.

Has the same effect on me at every visit - one also longs to see what's stashed away in the back rooms!

I was staggered to find "Thales" lion down in the basement. He was supposed to have dedicated one on the Sacred Way at Didimar (?,I flounder) Is this really it - his name is engraved on it.

We went to see the Forgotten Empire exhibition about Persia - it was amazing to see artefacts (okay, so some of them were reproductions but large scale stuff that I've only seen in books before)some that have been shown here for the first time - To think they could have been seen or handled by Queen Esther and Mordecai or Nehemiah.

Just loved the stairway friezes from Persepolis.

We live near Sutton Hoo so visit the National Trust site regularly - worth seeing as well as the intricate and elaborate grave goods on show at the Brit Museum. An archaeologist took our sons classes to visit the burial mounds and exhibition hall before it officially opened - really caught their imagination.

After recently coming back from Egypt, i would now love to go and see some of the artefacts in the British museum. (Because lets face it i can't afford to travel to egypt left right and center.)
I've loved Ancient Egypt since i was little and now after being to Egypt i want to see all of the museums which hold Ancient artefacts such as The british museum, the Louvre and Berlin museum, oh and Turin.

Brilliant museum, but very seriously lacking in exhibition space for the early prehistory of Britain, especially considering the exciting discoveries in Britain over the past few years: Boxgrove, and only recently Pakefield (although admittedly, the latter is perhaps a little too recent to be found in a museum).
