He's up against it again. Apparently a large statue of him is about to be set up but many residents are aflame about where. Few seem to know anything much about him.

The most common remark I heard was that since he lost, why bother. I hope someone with some knowledge will send some info to their local rag.

Ancient residents dispute the marked battle site, anyway; their proposition seems more viable too. But unsuitable to raise a statue - or would one in a more distant vista be good? I like happening on historical memorials in such places.

    Dear Priscilla,

Thanks for this post. Could you perhaps direct me to a website where I can find out more on the statue of Ealdorman Brythnoth?

    Regards

    Craig

    To Harold/Craig
Can't be of much help there. Try the Maldon (and I think ) Burnham Standard paper - or the Essex Chronicle.
All I know is that it's about 17 or so feet from plinth to head, that the town objected strongly to its being put at the end of the Promenade and are now objecting to its being put in a lake.
I thought he deserved better than all the wrangling. The local paper has it all - or send them a letter. It has all been done by letters - the complaint, I mean.
    Regards P.

Adding to that - the 1000 year celebrations and re-enactment were great. Driving in for them, we loved the signs Saxons this way or Vikings that -and seeing them get off buses in full gear.
Great day out with the ancient Battle chronical read - mercifully in modern English and the later fire works and ship burning etc. Not to mention hot roast pork and apple sauce rolls.

Perhaps when the statue goes up we'll have a few Saxons and Vikings there again - (the rolls would do,otherwise, if not.) The Statue has a head; the Vikings took his in reality - the rest lies in Ely Cathedral, I think.
    Regards P.

I am in favour of anything that reminds people that history did not start in 1016.

How about a statue of Athelwulf at the site of the battle of Acleah (851AD), assuming it can be agreed and a statue of Caewlin at the site of the battle of Deorham (Dyrham 577 AD), the site of which is generally agreed. The Englsih won both of those battles as well.
