The modern equivelent would be someone like Colin Renfrew, but it depends what area and period you are looking at. Steve Mithin has a good book called After the Ice about the transition from the last Ice Age to the dawn of urbanisation which provides a global snapshot of what we knew a couple of years ago. Although now they've got to take into consideration possible coexistence with non anatomically modern humans in Asia up until the start of the glacial retreat after the finds on Flores in Indonesia.

Sorry, that should be Steve Mithen. You'll probably stand a better chance of finding it that way.

Gordon Childe was the pioneer of what was termed culture history. There hasnt been one particular pioneer these days in post processual archaeology, but one important figure was Ian Hodder, who pushed thinking forward in the 80s. There are several different names who were pioneers in certain areas of post processual archaeology. Try Johnson's Archaeological Theory Today for a better view because I cant remember any of the names off the top of my head!
