I visited Egypt in 1976, arriving by ferry from Sudan at Aswan and travelling up to Cairo by train. At just about every site I visited William Boggie had written his name in nice script with the smoke from his light (I presume). He was still there when I returned to Cairo in 1982 en route to southern Africa.
There is lots of graffiti in the ruins but no-one as ubiquitous as William, I wonder if anything is known about him.

apparently the graffitti dates from 1819-20...is that right? i saw some websites where others are asking about him also...
good luck.
Many thanks for the reply, I would think the early 1800's could be about right, there could have been soldiers/sailors from Britain wandering around the ruins at that time (if he was British).
