I recently found nails, a bracket, and what appears to be a spike or a weapon of some sort in a local field. All the items are iron but carbon content is unknown. Where can I get the items dated and identified without a museum trying to stick their noses in. Also, I live in one of the last bastions of the Roman Empire, Augsburg, Germany, founded a little more than 2000 years ago!

In England each county has a Finds Liaison Officer who works closely with local archaeologists and metal detectors - perhaps a similar position exists in Germany?

I am rather perplexed by your attitude towards museums. Surely museums need to know about local finds so they can better interpret the area.

In England we have had a major problem with a small percentage of irresponsible people using metal detectors who do not properly record and report their finds which means that whatever they discover is lost to all other people who have an interest in history and archaeolgy.

sometimes declaring directly an ancient object is not the smartest thing to do: if the object is considered interesting by museums they will declare the whole area as beig of 'increased archaiologic importance', thus they will prohibit any further works or projects of any kind on that land and despite the fact that they will rarely visit the area to carry out any further archaiologic work (that demands funds and funds are scarce these times), so the only thing that will happen is that not only dear Wheels will not be able to do any works in his house but probably his neighbours also, and probably the value of the land will lose a bit of its value hence nobody will be especially happy about that...

If one wants to satisfy his curiosity, the smart thing to do is to approach a state service but declaring another place like for example a field (cultivation will always be permitted since it does not destroys much) with similar characteristics (type of land, depth of finding the specimen etc.) - but then again expensive scientific tests will not be carried out for one two iron specimens that prove nothing new or revolutionary

... of course that is not to say I support illegal declarations and other such behaviours ... but then your life is your life...

PS: To built the metro in order that the other half of Greece gathers also in Athnes, and to host the ... new Olympics, they destroyed almost all the ancient city that lied below the modern city (those fragments of specimen of low interest that they show now as a decoration in the metro are a joke... just to say that 'we did not find anything bigdeal underneath just the usual broken little statues and such ... "... while at the same time they cancelled the metro of Thessaloniki some years earlier because underneath was the ruins of the Roman times plus the earlier Greek ones). In Athens however the archaiological service simply "shut it up" despite being the most interesting archailogical area to dig in the world.

PS: Thus, saying nothing of what they found done there (... now the question is how they could find anything in anyway using a 100tn machine virtually eating the earth)... they left the space for all those Atlantologists saying that the metro project proceeded to lower levels that corresponded with pre-5000 AD eras and that they found man-made tunnels that communicated with certain (known) entrances (caves) in the Ymitos mountain etc....

PS: Based on the 'scientology' of the archaiological services I cannot reduce the value of the Atlantologists... the latter they talk and the former do not make a single comment on that...
