I'm sure I read that some helmets had wrting on them. Possibly American soldiers or marines. Am I imagining it?

Decorating helmets with personal markings or nicknames has a long tradition behind it for pilots. I suspect the practice is frowned upon in the infantry.

I remember seeing images of one Apache crewmember in Iraq, who had "Shai Hulud" on his helmet. That made me smile smiley - smiley

    Miss Elizabeth

Did you mean official terms, or graffiti?

US Army Military Police had, and have I think, "M.P." stencilled on their helmets.

In WWII, British Civil Defence units had different titles on their helmets, and different colours, in order to easily identify who was who at an "incident" (bomb site).

There was a trend in Vietnam for US soldiers, at least in some units, to personalise their helmet covers with messages and symbols. Photographs of the period often show this. Michael Herr, a journalist in Vietnam, in his book "Dispatches" makes a point of describing the helmet decorations of the men he is writing about. Is this what you were thinking of, perhaps?
