Closure of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History Message Boards

  To all members of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History message boards
  
  We're very sorry to say that we're going to be closing the History message boards and we wanted to tell you here first:
  History Hub
  Family Trees
  Ancient and Archaeology
  Wars and Conflict
  
  Unfortunately due to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Online’s restructure and redundancies, we're not able to carry on all of our web offerings and the History message boards are one of those that are having to close. We wanted to give you all as much notice as possible, so the four boards mentioned will close at 5pm on Thursday 22 December. The Friday Quiz will end as of today, but please feel free to start your own quizzes until the boards close in two weeks’ time.
  
  Please note that the message boards and their content aren’t being deleted from the web; all of your discussions, debate and information will remain on the site for your reference in the future.
  
  We've loved reading your posts, and setting the History Quiz every week, and we wanted to thank each and every one of you for contributing. For those of you who would like to continue to share your love of history there are other boards available you may like to try:

  The following may answer some of your questions…
  
  Why is the board closing?
  Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Online has undergone 25% cuts as part of the Delivering Quality First review. This has meant a sizeable reduction in staff to the point where services have had to be cut.

  This is not what I would like as a licence fee payer.
  The Putting Quality First review has reconsidered how the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ can most effectively use its resources, and outlined the services that it will reduce and close as part of Delivering Quality First. Unfortunately message boards are one of these services.
  
  
  
  
  Why is the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ censoring message boards?
  The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ does not censor message boards. You can, of course, still go to the other boards mentioned to discuss Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ programming.
  
  
  Why weren’t we told about the closure before?
  The final decision to close the boards has only just been taken. We have worked to give users two weeks’ notice so they can get used to the idea and familiarise themselves with the other message boards suggested as alternatives.

  Well done Team Beeb. We quite understand, as 'cuts' are all the rage these days.
  
  The world will keep spinning but we'll miss your (esp. Andrew's) tolerance and good sense.
  
  So, we have been faxed-over to the once capable, if slightly moribund, hands of H2G2.
  That should soon put the mockers on our little tiffs.
  ( I have just checked 'Anne Frank's Diary' on H2G2. The last contribution was made ten years ago)
  Can we stand the pace?

  Given the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has an implied mandate not to tread on the toes of Sky Sports/Sky News etc. I really hope that the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ no longer comments on anything Sky does first, stops advertising its own shows as news and makes BB Breakfast about 8 minutes long - as the rest is just filler.

  Sorry but as you've raised the subject here for some reason:

  Oh, please. Over the last few years, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has incrementally cut back the facility to use its message boards to comment on current affairs to the point where it's now practically non-existent. We started with separate boards for domestic and foreign news, on which anyone could initiate a discussion. We're now reduced to the ironically-entitled "Have Your Say", in which a small number of often trivial topics are selected by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ for discussion, subject to the further constraint of a cap being put on the number of characters allowed. Any attempt to discuss current affairs, even Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ coverage of the same, on "Points of View" is immediately closed down. And I, and doubtless others, have had posts removed simply for alluding to matters of fact - in some cases, even when they'd been reported on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ in the first place. A reference to John Prescott neglecting to pay council tax on one of his properties comes to mind. More often than not, complaints elicited no response. If that doesn't constitute censorship, it's a reasonable imitation.
  
  IAs there will now be no facility to discuss historical topics either, I feel there's little reason for me to retain a Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ log-on at all.
