1916: The Battle of the Somme ends after more than four months of fighting and 147,000 Allied soldiers killed.Β
And also 164,000 German soldiers killed.
As well as a complete revision of Allied tactics on the Western Front that was eventually to lead to victory 2 years later. German resources were fatally drained by a combination of the Battles of Somme and Verdun (the pressure on which the Somme was designed to relieve).
German High Command realised there was no effective prospect of achieving a military breakthrough on the Western Front so the fatal decision was taken at the beginning of 1917 to revert to unrestricted submarine warfare in a bid to remove Britain (who was effectively subsidising France and Italy) from the war. However it failed in that objective, luring the USA into the conflict instead.
