Can anyone help? Amongst my grandfather's effects I found a Baltic Medal inscribed with the name W.Hince. I have traced most branches of my ancestors back to 1800 and there is no Hince amongst them. Perhaps my grandfather found/bought the medal? How can I find out more about this man? Am I correct in thinking he was Royal Navy? Any help would be appreciated.
The records are held at The National Archive, Kew, but are not online. The medals were given mostly to naval people but also to some engineers during the Crimean War. Apparently some of the medals were inscribed later.
If W Hince is not connected to your family, perhaps he was a friend.
A Victorian Wars Forum exists where there apparently is a Medals Roll -
Hopefully you'll find some kind of answer to your question.
Thank you for responding. Yes, he may have been a friend. I can see I'll have to try the National Archives to, hopefully, determine where he originated and if there could possibly be any real connection.
Thank you for responding. I will have a look at this site.
