I would like to know which battalions were active in Fermoy, Co Cork, in the years around 1820. I have an ancestor who was born there in 1819 and his brother who was born in Bristol the previous year. Could their father have been in the army, stationed in Bristol and then posted to Fermoy?

The father is Samuel Smart. The elder son is John Andrew Smart and the younger son is also called Samuel Smart.

There are a couple of reference books which document the British Army regiments' locations, they are long out of print but a large library might have copies.

You could try The Nafziger Collection of Orders of Battle

Or go through newspaper archives - 19th Century British Newspapers, The Times Digital Archive, The Grauniad Archive, The Scotsman Archive are all online and available free via some library sites - also some free Australian and NZ sites have newspapers online. The newspapers of the time carried detailed information of the movements of army regiments down to individual battalions and which ships they left on.

There is also the BritRegiments group on Yahoo Groups where there are a lot of people knowledgeable in British Army history.
