Just wondering if anyone can throw some light on the Queens South African & Kings South African medals. My grans uncle was Daniel Monaghan b. 1869 in Ireland and joined the Leinster Regiment. I have a copy of (or part of ) his service records and these two medals are mentioned and he seems to have been in South Africa from 1900 - 1902. Many thanks.

He served in the Boer War then, anitakate.

It's a pity you haven't actually got his KSA since it isn't every day one sees a medal issued by the British suspended on a very Irish republican Green White and Orange ribbon! The colours were South African, of course, but it does strike the average Irish person as funny.

It's doubly a shame that you can't look at the medals themselves since they would also have been adorned with metal strips (clasps) on the ribbons itemising the campaigns and battles in which your great uncle took part. Rather confusingly, one clasp contained simply the word "Belfast". This was not a reference to the Northern Irish city but the name ascribed to the territory near Wonderfontein which saw some action in 1901. Soldiers who managed to avoid such activity altogether received QSA and/or KSA medals with just "South Africa" and the relevant year upon the clasp.

If he lasted three years out there then I am sure he'd have had a fair number of clasps. Such medals are not ten-a-penny. Hopefully they're still in the family or somewhere where they'll be appreciated!

Thanks for your reply Nordmann! Am I correct in thinking that all soldiers who served in South Africa were awarded the medals and the different clasps would have related to the campaigns or battles?
He also seems to have been in India from 1889 to 1895, but I dont see any medal awarded, so maybe medals werent given for just service, but rather campaigns?
Unfortunately I havent seen the medals and all trace with his family is lost. Oh the irony of the colours! You gave me a laugh!

Yes - the QSR and KSR were awarded to all who served upon the completion of their time there. I believe that soldiers "garrisoned throughout" (saw no action) also received them but I'm not 100% sure.

India would have been different. That would have been a "normal" colonial assignment, not a war, however he may indeed have received a recognition for his time there in the form of a regimental medal or similar. That's something you can possibly check with the Royal Canadians / Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment themselves. They might also be able to help you get even more details of his service. Their address is:

    Leinster Regiment Association
