For the benefit of those interested or didn’t see it the first time around
Operation mincemeat is on again tonight Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Four 22:25-23:25
Still worth another viewing.
Thanks bandick, I did miss this first time 'round, so will definitely be watching tonight. Incidentally, the programme immediately prior to this (9PM - 10,25PM) is a Storyville subtitled 'The Man Who Fooled The Nazis', about the Spanish double-agent codenamed Garbo. This looks like a good watch.
Cheers.
Must see if this is on iPlayer. The book of the same title 'Operation Mincemeat' is very good, I read it last year.
I just read the book. Far from being the elaborate and foolproof hoax that I had always imagined, it seems the entire plan was rather amateurish and flawed.
From reading the book, it seems that the hoax may have deceived people ranging from the fisherman and German ambassador in Spain, up the chain to Baron von Roenne the head of Abwehr.
It seems he may have strongly suspected it was a fraud, but didn't report it as such because despised the Nazis and was trying to undermine the Nazi war effort.
He was executed for alleged involvement in the plot against Hitler in 1944.
