My Great Grandfather was an Able Seaman on the HMS Powerful when it assisted in the relief of Ladysmith in the Boer War. He transferred to HMS Doris immediately afterwards. We have an inscribed watch and various other paraphenalia that was presented to him (along with the rest of the crew of the Powerful) to commemorate the event on their return to Portsmouth.

I have just found a reference to someone with the same name being injured at Eslin in Nov 1899. This chap was a Private in the Royal Naval Brigade. Looking at the map it seems to me unlikely that it would be the same man, Enslin seems to be near Cape Town in the east whereas Ladysmith would be best approached from the west coast, probably Durban. But I readily admit I know nothing at all about the Boer War.

How likely would it be that an AB Seaman from the HMS Powerful would be in Enslin as part of the Royal Naval Brigade on the way to Ladysmith? And, other than going to the National Archive and looking through HMS Powerful's Logs etc, how might I find out if it was the same man?

    Thanks

    PP

For what its worth a great, great uncle of mine was in the East Yorks at The Relief of Ladysmith. He was part of the bayonet charge up Telegraph Hill. He came back to the UK and stayed with his recently widowed sister. He must have told a lot of stories about that to my grandfather, who was about eleven at the time. So I had a version told to me some sixty years later
