Hi all,
If you've read the book 'Operation Mincemeat' you'll be interested to know that the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has a documentary on 'Operation Mincemeat' being broadcast on Sunday 5 December, 9pm on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TWO.
Ben Macintyre, the author and presenter will also be writing a post for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TV Blog and they'd like to offer you the opportunity to suggest questions to Ben.
So if you want to know how they managed to hide a body on a submarine or how an eminent historian's underpants were commandeered for the mission then this is your chance.
Ben will answer a limited number of your questions picking the ones he has the most interesting answers to.
Please suggest your questions by posting them on this thread before 4pm on Friday 26 November.
Ben's post will appear on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TV blog ( around 5 December, when the programme will broadcast on TV. I'll post a link here when it's live.
Cheers
Andrew

Hi all,
For those of you who would like to ask a question but are unfamilliar with the operation:
Operation Mincemeat launched in 1943 was one of the the most successful wartime deceptions ever attempted. Created by the mastermind genius of Charles Cholomondely, and, Ewen Montagu, the plan involved the dead body of a tramp and a plethora of faked documents. By convincing the Germans that the Allies planned to attack Greece instead of Sicily, they helped changed the course of the Second World War.
For a fuller explanation of this intriguing story please look here:
Cheers
Andrew

Andrew Host hope I read the article correctly, but I read that account, in a Penguin book. A dead derelict was allowed to float to the Spanish coast with information as described, he was also Welsh, and something about a service conducted and perhaps a fake burial or something along that line. Unsure of exact details as I read it, just guessing around 1948. Believe the book title was, "The man who never was", or something like that. Memory can be elusive but I'm sure I never dreamt it. As I read the account I found I was well familiar with the details, being Welsh I was fully aware of the account that he was Welsh. The book was a best seller.

Hi rhymney,
Worth following the link as it gives more detail on the identity of the poor fellow whose corpse was used - he was indeed Welsh.

Hi Andrew, the story was also made into a Film in 1956, I have watched it a few times and it is very accurate, no James Bond gizmo's or car chases. If you can track down a copy it is well worth a watch, maybe the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ could stick it on to complement the documentary.

Andrew Host, I keep having trouble signing on to the message boards, asking for my password then stating that there is no one of the name and password listed, then have to replace password. Any idea what I'm doing wrong, never had that problem some time ago? Thanks.

Hi Wally,
I remember The Man Who Never Was from childhood - bits of it anway! The bits I remember make me think that they made a few changes from the real story....

Hi rhymney,
I've not picked up on anyone else having problems in this area.
Blindingly obvious - but you are making sure the upper/lower case is exactly the same each time? Caps lock can also be an issue!
Assuming that that isn't the problem I'll ask about - if I get any leads on problems at this end I'll let you know.
Cheers
Andrew

Andrew Host, Thank you, I type each letter lower case and am baffled, probably missed the box to tick, 'remember me on this computer', if I do try to find it get 'no record on this computer', (something like that).
I do find logging on to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Message Boards reorganized day or so ago, quite a nuisance, can't find the AtoZ posted on opening post. Also picked up something, as flooded with advertisements for the first time ever, strange as this is an Apple laptop and very well controlled.

Andrew, you know very well we have had exactly the same signing in problem on the FH board; we complain about it enough!
The film 'The man who never was' is pretty close to the original book of the same name (except for the sub-plot about the Irish spy and 'Pam' losing her fiance)
The book was written by Ewen Montagu at a time when a lot of the detail of the case was still classified information so he was not allowed to include it.
'Operation Mincemeat' has no such restrictions so is the full story of the idea and how it was carried out, the criteria by which the body was chosen and prepared (and the fact that the young man's father had to be informed and give his consent) and the details that added versimilitude. It's a very interesting book, the more so if you have read 'The Man who never was'.

Hi Holygrandmother,
I know there were problems reported in FT last week - but that related to a period of downtime for maintenence. - unless I've missed something recently?
I've not registered complaints of signing-in problems from the other boards. I have encouraged everyone to post problems to the specific threads I have set up as it's easier to keep track. If there are ongoing issues please let me know.
Many thanks
Andrew

Hi Holygrandmother,
Without letting this thread stray too far off-topic - I've checked back on the New Look Boards thread in FT and posted a message regarding continued issues with sign-on since the maintenance period late Thurs. I have reported back that some members are still experiencing problems.
So as to prevent this thread from drifting further - can I ask you to post and further coments on the FT funtionality there?
Many thanks!
Andrew
