My wifes Grandad cast an aluminiun ashtray from the remains of the Zeplin L48.He worked on Leiston works, where he cast the ashtray. This ashtray is now in my posession. This came to light following the programme about the First Blitz shown on the Time Watch series.

I watched the timewatch programe and had to admit that both sides were brave. the Germand for flying in death traps filled with gas, and the British pilots for flying that hight in open cockpited planes with no heaters at minus heaven knows what.

Very true Fred. I had a book many years ago called "balloons and airships" that had quite a lot on the raids on the UK. It even commented that Mathy knew his time was numbered, but kept going, and the loss of Strasser later pretty much finished it all off.
What the program put over very well was the measured and liesurely way the early airship raids proceeded - because there was nothing to put them down. Of course with heated clothing/cabins and oxygen the airships could have flown far higher - but it would have been a reducing payoff strategy.
If you have not read it already try to get hold of HG Wells "War In The Air" its a great read only written a few years before the war. Quite prophetic in both ways - how frightening the airships could be, and yet how they could not "hold" a city; just wreck it.

Two books if you can still get them,
The Zeppelin in Combat by Douglas Robinson
The First Battle of Britain by Raymond Fredette.
Both very good reads.

Spruggs.
