It was estimated that around 150,000 to 200,000 men of the German army were surrounded in Dunkirk by British forces, this was in October 1944 having been by-passed by the main British army thrust into France. The men of 2879 Squadron R.A.F.Regiment including myself were sent to the village of Gyvelde on the outskirts of Dunkirk to assist and gain battle experience with the Czechoslovakian tank squadron that were containing them. They knew that somewhere along the line they would try to break out for food.(This in fact they did at a later date)We manned observation posts, gun posts, and had the occasional skimish when on foot patrol into German lines.Little is known of the part played by the R.A.F.Regiment during the 2nd world war but apart from defence of airfields they were sent to various locations in operational areas and assisted successfully on many occasions.

strange that the British did to the Germans what they almost did to us at Dunkirk.

Peter,
Welcome to the boards.
I must admit to being entirely ignorant of this type of action involving the RAF regiment. I had thought that they were restricted to defensive operations around air bases.

Unlike todays RAF Regiment that are known in Afghanistan as The Short Range Desert Group.
