Today marks the 65th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day on 15 August 1945 and the end of the Second World War.
On what date, however, did the Second World War begin?
That would be dependent on one's perspective. From a British perspective, war broke out on 3rd September 1939. However, if you are German or Polish you would be in no doubt that WWII actually began on 1st September 1939.

Treaty of Versailles signed 28 June 1919
Various dates from 1931 to 1941, depending on who and where you are.
If you are Chinese the war started on 7 July 1937 when Japanese forces crossed the Marco Polo Bridge into China 'proper' starting the Second Sino-Japanese War that lasted until September 1945 (although Japanese forces had invaded and ultimately annexed Manchuria beginning on 19 September 1931). If you are Ethiopian the war began on 3 October 1935 but ended on 27 November 1941 when Italian forces surrendered.
