Ship was wrecked 14Dec40 Eddystone area. All crew were lost.Any details of bodies recovered and where they were buried. I am looking for information about Kirk, Gilbert, a cook on board. Can anyone help?
This question came up on another forum and one of the respondents provided a full list of those killed on the Branlebas, including Gilbert Kirk.
and his entry on the CWGC site [for some reason this gives a date of 14th October]
Thanks for your message. The dates are interesting. I wonder if the wreck site is a war grave?
Almost certainly a war grave. The fact that Gilbert is commemorated on the war memorial would suggest his body was never recovered.
It looks like CWGC have made a mistake. Everything else I've seen says Branlebas went down on the 14th December.
Best Wishes.
I'm in agreement about the date - all my sources give the December date too.
