The title says it all really. I was wondering whether Churchill ever visited the city because it was quite important. It housed the Western Approaches command for the Battle of the Atlantic, it was the premier port during the war and was the second city of the Empire and it suffered the greatest German air raid on a British city during the war. Does anyone know?

WSC visited Liverpool on 25th April 1941, to inspect the damage caused by the Luftwaffe. Hope this helps.

The bombing of Coventry was probably a much more devastating raid.

True about Coventry, but when I said greatest I meant numerically. I suppose I should have said the largest.

For your info, the most heaverly bombed place per head of Pop. was the County Borough of Bootle, North of Liverpool. which suffered damage to over 85% of its housing stock. Gladstone dock was used as the navys escorts on The Atlantic convoys.
