Hello, Iam new to these boards so forgive me if this topic has already been covered. I am writing an essay which has been given to me by a university tutor to help me get a place on a course.
My question is, 'Was the United States responsible for causing the Cold War in Europe?'
Can anybody give some advice of where to find information online. My local Library does not have any books relating to the Cold War and it will take a few weeks to order them in and I have only two weeks in which to complete this.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Perchance, that's an exam question and not just idle curiosity?
I suggest that you run searches for, among others, the following keywords:
Yalta Conference
Fulton Speech
Berlin Blockade
Marshall Plan
George F. Kennan
Truman Doctrine
Perhaps others can suggest more...
As far as I am aware it is an exam question from a few years ago. Which is why I have been given it.
I would think of a much longer period for the Cold War, that being perhaps just the period when it started. I have an English Heritage book on the buildings of the Cold War and that uses 1946-1989 as the period of the Cold War.
It mentions the Churchill speech at Fulton of March 1946 which used the phrase "Cold War" for the first time in public though it had been used in a private telegram from Truman to him in 1945. Walter Lippman then used the phrase in a series of articles in 1947.
It might be worth looking up some articles on the formation of NATO.
Also have a look in CARL, there could be some papers there.

Churchill used the phrase "Iron Curtain" (which has numerous attributions including Goebbels) in the Fulton, Missouri speech but not "Cold War" which is first attributed to George Orwell as here:
