How can I find out what (if any) service someone was in during the second world war please? I know that they were discharged from the Merchant Navy in about 1937 and cannot find anything else about them until they turn up in England in the American Red Cross in 1946. (I have contacted the ARC but no help there.) They were born 1902 and died 1954. I have tried the National Archives service on line but could not come up with anything there that was available on line and cannot get there to check further, so any suggestions need to be what I can see on line please.

Hi,
you could find something here
But I'm not sure I never try to use it.
Probably you've to contact the Royal Navy or the Ministry of defence (I think they could have an office for those requests)
Bye

Thanks but the MOD need their rank number and unit to find the records, the very things I am seeking!

Hi,
If the only information you have are in your post, they're hazier that I think.
I can suggest you to post this request on Family Trees Board, I think they have much experience in this type of research and They could advice you about an on line source to find what you need.
Finally, try this
You need: First and Middle Name(s), Last or Family Name, The year of the year range of a life event (e.g. Birth, Marriage, Death) Country or Region.
Good Luck!

I have his name, dates of birth, marriage death. His last job start and finish (on death) dates. I have the fact that he was wearing an American Red Cross Field Directors uniform in a photo date stamped 1946. But can't get any info from the ARC or find out if or if not he was in the services during the Second World war.
